Remy Ma's Appeal Denied By Judge

After filing for an appeal last January, it was announced yesterday (February 24) that Remy Ma’s eight-year sentence for a 2007 shooting incident would be upheld. XXLMag.com spoke to the Bronx rapstress’ husband, Brooklyn MC Papoose, to find out her thoughts on the legal setback.

Pap, who returned from the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in New York’s Westchester County, just minutes ago, was the first person to break the news to Remy. “She wasn’t happy about it, but she understands the situation that she’s in,” he told XXL. “Mentally she’s free, her mind is right. She’s a strong person [and] she’s got strong family around her so she gonna be alright. We just gotta continue to fight.”

The DJ Kay Slay protégé said in order for the verdict in the case to be reversed four out of seven judges had to rule in her favor. Two did, including the chief judge. “That’s definitely a good sign that somebody is definitely seeing the truth of what’ really going on here, which is the fact that she’s innocent,” he said.

As previously reported, Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years behind bars in May 2008 for assault, weapons possession and coercion charges, stemming from a July 2007 incident in which a friend, Makeda Barnes-Joesph, was shot. The former first lady of Terror Squad had accused her friend of stealing $3,000 from her purse.—Jesse Gissen

Rick Ross Signs ATL rapper PILL to Maybach Music Group

Southern rapper Rick Ross shows no signs of slowing down the expansion of his Maybach Music Group, as he recently signed Atlanta-based rapper Pill to the roster.

Reports of Ross' latest acquisition landed online Tuesday (February 22).
It was announced via Twitter late last night that Pill was the latest signee to the imprint. The 2010 XXL Freshman was already signed to Warner/Asylum, which acquired Maybach Music Group over the weekend, but is now a part of Rick Ross's ever-expanding team that within the last few weeks also added former XXL Freshman alum Wale as well as Meek Mill, who graces the current Freshmen cover, set to drop next month. Maybach Music Group's official Twitter account simply posted "@PILL4180 @MEEKMILL @RICKYROZAY @WALE @CAROLCITYCARTEL," naming the new players on the roster. "[B]ig moves," Ross then tweeted at Pill early this morning. Pill's bio on his Twitter account now reads "Maybach Music/Warner Recording." (XXL Mag)

Prior to putting Pill on the MMG roster, Ross discussed the future of newly signed rappers Wale and Meek Mill.
"[Signing Wale and Meek Mill], it just solidifies we're one of the fastest-growing labels in hip-hop...I mean, it is what it is," Ross said in response to the bidding war for his Maybach Music Group. "Right now we're on fire. We making, and it's not just a temporary thing, but we're making the best music, man. And we make all ranges of music. I think the industry's just understanding that. So it's not just about Rick Ross and Maybach Music, it's our brand, it's our movement, it's the type of sound that we done brought to the game -- We getting paper, what else can I say?" (The Source)
Pill's announcement comes just days after Ross' Maybach Music Group inked a deal with Warner Bros

Yung LA Speaks to XXL about his Face Tattoo

The Internet has been buzzing since an image of Yung LA’s new face tattoo popped up online. Following speculation that the ink represented the Duct Tape Entertainment logo—an Atlanta based record label, home to such artists as Alley Boy and Big Bank Black—LA phoned XXLMag.com to clarify the reasoning behind his decision.

The ATL native confirmed that the tat—freshly inked last week—is in fact the DTE logo. “That tattoo just comes from something in the city,” he explained. “My cousins grew up with a lot of people from Zone 6, I know a lot of people from Zone 6, and the people from Zone 6, there whole movement is called Duct Tape and I just had been really getting up with these guys. Everybody in the city from Zone 6, Zone 3, Zone 1, from Duct Tape to YGC to CDB to 30 Deep, there’s so many cliques in Atlanta and I just wanted to be the Robin Hood, I just wanted to be the guy that could have relationships with everybody in the city.”

Alley Boy, whose an artist and the co-CEO of DTE., told XXL that he does not co-sign the “Ain’t I” rapper getting the ink. “[Yung LA] aint’ get the okay from none one of us and ain’t none one of us told you nothin’ about you having nothing to do with Duct Tape,” Alley told XXLMag.com.

LA disagrees, saying he went to the tattoo shop after a meeting with Big Bank, who he calls “the real CEO” of Duct Tape. “[Big Bank] was kinda fucking with me and just feeling the whole link up move that I was screaming. Off of that when we sat down and had the talking everybody was just choppin’ it up and I was like this is what it is, this is the new beginning.”

“I can’t really go on what [Alley Boy] say ’cause he’s not the CEO of the label,” Yung continued. “So he wasn’t around at the sit-down, when we did chop it up. I had my relationship with Big Bank Black, other cats, and people that I grew up with and they love me genuinely. That’s the relationship I had.”

LA wants to clarify that he never wanted people to think he made the move in an effort to join the label. “It was never a signing,” he said. “It was just an understanding. It’s a verbal understanding, it’s an eye to eye understanding that’s saying, ‘Boy I see what you got going on,’ ‘Oh shit I’m fucking with you, when we out in these clubs we linkin’ up.’ It was never a deal.”

Meanwhile, Yung LA is trying to get out of his deal with T.I.’s label Grand Hustle Records, which he said is a struggle. “Right now we’re actually fighting,” he said. “We got our lawyers going to war with them. They just tryin’ to free me out of the contract. They don’t wanna let me go, but they don’t want to work for me either.”

Asked why he wants to leave, he said: “The business is just all backwards. I feel like at this time in my career its time to surround myself with a successful system, no disrespect to Grand Hustle, when I first got there, their system was crazy. They had a system that worked. And over the last three-and-a-half years I just watched their system go down.”

In addition, LA was recently involved in several violet altercations. Two weeks back, Yung said the mother of his child stabbed him over six times and he was shot six months ago in a robbery. In both incidents, he claims to have called Grand Hustle, and no one visitied him in the hospital. “I reached out to everybody that I thought was my family and nobody came to see me,” he shared. “After that happened it was just hurtin’.”

As for what’s next for Yung LA, he said he is currently prepping the release of his new mixtape, Tattoos and Jewelry, set to drop on March 30.—Jesse Gissen

Curren$y - Daze of Thunder

Curren$y may have just signed a deal with Warner Bros Records, but he will still be releasing material on Damon Dash’s BluRoc imprint.

A rep for BluRoc has confirmed with XXLMag.com that Spitta will be dropping his Muscle Car Chronicles CD/DVD— which is a film and accompanying nine-track soundtrack—with the label on March 15.

The package will include eight original records that finds the New Orleans MC rhyming over live instrumentation produced by Dash’s folk artist Sean O’Connell as well as drumming by The Mars Volta’s own Thomas Pridgen. The last song, “Fly Out (Part Tres),” is a remix that includes verses from Mikey Rocks of The Cool Kids and Tabi Bonney. Meanwhile, the 22-minute Coodie & Chike directed movie, documents the recording. [Watch trailer below]

The label rep also revealed plans to drop the 2009 XXL Freshman’s Pilot Talk 3 album on BluRoc.

As previously reported, the New Orleans MC will be putting out his first project for Warner on April 19. Titled Covert Coup, the EP produced entirely by The Alchemist, will include about 10-12 tracks. It will be followed by a 40-city tour.—Jesse Gissen

Lil Kim Says "Haters" Dont think she sold 100,000 Copies in a Day

Lil' Kim was mired in a minor controversy this past week when the onetime Notorious B.I.G. protégé claimed on Twitter that her brand-new mixtape, Black Friday, sold more than 100,000 copies in the first 24 hours of release at a clip of $10 apiece.

The collection, which dropped on Valentine's Day, features the title track and an accompanying video targeting Kim nemesis Nicki Minaj. And the Brooklyn rapper's Black Friday sales figure would have grossed Kim $1 million, a figure many fans online refuted.

Various bloggers disputed the numbers, going as far as to call PayPal (purchases could only be made via the site) after Kim announced she was the highest seller in its history; a PayPal rep told StreetAnthem.com the e-commerce site doesn't track such figures.

Curiously, Kim's tweet about her sales feat appear to have been deleted from her page, but a Lil' Kim fan site still has a screen grab of the post. Kim spoke out on the issue on Thursday and admitted she didn't know the current sales figure. The mixtape isn't available at any online retailers or in digital form.

"No, I actually don't know right now," she told Rap-Up.com about her mixtape sales. "I have a team that kinda checks up on all that. We'll keep you posted."

Kim said the figures could actually be higher than her initial estimate, but rather than celebrate the success of her mixtape — which unlike typically free mixtapes must be purchased and then shipped in CD format — she fired back at her naysayers who suggested she was practicing fuzzy math.

"At the end of the day, you're always going to have your haters," she said. "We need the haters. There was actually a representative at PayPal who basically didn't really confirm or deny it, but also [said] that they're very happy and proud of the success of Lil' Kim. I think numbers in other areas speak for themselves. I mean, why aren't they questioning the 'Black Friday' [video] being at 2.5 [million views] in less than 18 hours? Why aren't they questioning that? What's the difference? How can you add up one thing and not the other? I just feel like people pick and choose the area that they want to attack."

Lupe Fiasco Ft. John Legend - Never Forget You

On his 29th birthday, Lupe Fiasco gives a gift to fans by releasing “Never Forget You” featuring John Legend, a cut off his third album Lasers, arriving March 8. The rapper’s latest boasts a piano-kissed beat and nostalgic lyrics that recall the less complicated days, such as, “The first love kisses, the broke heart disses/ This is just like a first-class ticket/ Back, to the first written rap/ The crumbled up paper and the pen with no cap.”

Additionally, the Chi-town native will continue to give back by liberating a track via iTunes each week for those who pre-order Lasers, including “All Black Everything,” “Out of My Head” with Trey Songz, and “Coming Up.”

50 Cent Talks With Jimmy Iovine, Ends Beef

50 Cent’s tweets about dissension between him, Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine, and Aftermath’s Dr. Dre have had a positive effect on at least one of those relationships. The G-Unit leader recently returned to Twitter to reveal that he and Jimmy had a conversation and have squashed their beef.

“Jimmy’s not mad at me any more we kicked it,” tweeted Fif on Tuesday (February 15). “I just have to talk to Dre now.”

Just the day before, the G-Unit leader had taken to the social media website and said that his new headphone line had caused tension between him, Iovine and Dre and even hinted at releasing a verse dissing the two, shocking information for fans because of his one-time close friendship with the West Coast producer.

“Jimmy Iovine and Dre mad at me cause I’m doing sleek by 50,” wrote Fif on Monday.

“I’m a little hurt Jimmy and Dre feel like that but f*ck it. I’m focused I got a surprise for everybody this go round. Would you faint if I told you I just wrote a verse about Jimmy and Dre. Oh my god this is hard. This sh*t gonna kill.”

Rumors of problems between Dre and Fif have been popping up online for several months and seemed to have some credence after the New York MC took his label over to EMI

Pusha T Denies Stealing From Consequence

The official version of Pusha T’s My God was released recently and though it was well-received by fans, fellow G.O.O.D. Music rapper Consequence took to Twitter to accuse the Virginia-bred lyricist of copying his style to create the single.

[box type="shadow"]“I have inspired so many…n*ggas keep emulating my yesterday flows,” wrote Consequence before adding, “My God I wish these clowns would stop stealing my lines…from certain rappers I expect a higher standard.”
[/box]

When asked about Consequence calling him out though Pusha seemed confused by the notion, and denied that he stole anything from the New York rapper.

“He said that I stole his lines? Wow. Nah, I haven’t really heard much about it,” said Pusha during an interview with Complex. “Everyone who’s been hitting me up has been telling me how crazy this song is. I don’t know. I mean, I haven’t taken anything from Consequence, or anybody else, for that matter.”

Consequence’s relationship with G.O.O.D. Music has apparently soured over the last few months. The rapper, who often collaborated with Kanye West, released a song titled Man Purses in the winter of last year that contained subtle disses towards the crew, including the line, “My crew ain’t been the same since Amber Rose and Taylor Swift.”

UPDATE -

Cons starts getting specific about the accusations he made against Pusha T about plagiarism.

Consequence has finally fully explained why he put labelmate Pusha T on blast for what he claims to be plagiarism on Pusha's latest song "My God." Cons took to Twitter this past week to speak out on rappers "stealing my lines."

Pusha T flippantly brushed off the accusations, assuring, "I haven't taken anything from Consequence, or anybody else for that matter." Well, now Cons has taken to KarmaloopTV to explain why he thinks Pusha bit his lyrics.

"I had a record called 'Last Supper' that Kanye [West] wanted me to get Pusha to do a verse on when 'everything was everything,'" Cons said. "So naturally I gave him my record, him being at the time my labelmate. Not to mention, I've known Pusha longer than I've known Kanye, for the record."

He said that the record hadn't been touched during the next few months, as he'd been busy with other projects. However, after hearing Pusha's "My God" online, he claims he heard similarities with his own "Last Supper."

"[My God's] beat is good, the first verse, cool. [I thought], 'He's doing his Pusha thing, word!' So we get through to the second verse and I hear 'It's the last supper for you niggas, just the picture repainted.' So I'm like, hold up, my record had went, 'Cudi got the kids, Cons got the streets, 'Ye got the globe, so we all going to eat/it's the last supper for you muthafuckas, I don't make a promise I can't keep.'"

Cons seems to have taken issue with the line "it's the last supper," and suggests that Pusha T's use of it comes directly from the record that had been given to him. Pusha T has not yet responded to Consequences recent claims.

Kanye West Goes Platinum For the 5th Time (BLOG)

Following in Nicki Minaj’s footsteps, Kanye West has finally inched his way over the million mark.

According to the Nielsen SoundScan report, released today (February 16), Kanye sold an additional 16,400 copies of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy this sales cycle, making his overall stats stand at 1,015,000. In his 12th week on The Billboard Top 200, West sits at the No. 26 position.

Continuing to lead all rap artists on the charts is Ms. Minaj. While she saw her weekly sales go up this week, her overall ranking dropped from No. 1 to No. 4. Over the last week, the Young Money Princess sold 46,700 units, a slight increase from last go-round’s 45,300. After 12 weeks, her total stands at 1,081,300 units sold.

Moving up three spots from No. 10 to No. 7 is Slim Shady’s Recovery. He moved 37,800 more units, adding up to a whopping 34 week tally of 3,573,300.

As for Lil Wayne and T.I. both took a slight tumble this week although remaining in the Top 40, coming in at No. 34 and No. 36 respectively. The self-proclaimed greatest rapper alive’s I Am Not A Human Being moved 15,400 units just like last week, bringing his total to 748,300l. The King of the South’s No Mercy moved 14,800 units, making his total now equals 424,900.

As for the Slaughterhouse’s self-titled EP, XXL’s March 2011 cover boys didn’t manage to crack the Top 40 in their first week on the charts. They ended up debuting at No. 147 after moving about 5,000 units.

Keep an eye out for Saigon’s long awaited album The Greatest Story Never Told to show up on the charts next week.

Rick Ross and Maybach Music Group to Sign with Cash Money?

Earlier this month, rumors spread that Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group was on the market, with potential partners like Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, Lyor Cohen’s Warner Music, Diddy’s Bad Boy Records and Bryan “Birdman” Williams’ Cash Money family all mentioned as being interest in acquiring the imprint. XXLMag.com recently caught up with Baby to find out the possibility of Rozay joining the YMCMB family.

“We in talks right now,” the New Orleans mogul confirmed with XXL. “If we do or if we don’t that’s still my partner, and one day in life we will, if time means now and if time means later, we will.”

“That’s my friend first of all, that’s my partner [and] that’s my homie,” Baby added. “I have a lot of respect for Ross and what he’s trying to do. “

As previously reported, Ross recently signed both Washington, D.C. rep Wale and up-and-coming Philly MC Meek Mill to Maybach. Other artists on the label include member of the Boss’s Triple C’s crew, Gunplay, Torch and Masspike Miles as well as reggae singer Magazeen.

Baby Responds to Jay Z's "Baby Money" Line From H.A.M

It seems like the Jay-Z vs. Cash Money/Young Money beef may be gaining some actual traction as Bryan “Birdman” Williams publicly responded via Twitter to Jay-Z’s supposed jab at the New Orleans label and crew.

"We gonna keep spending 'baby money' ...billionaire minds stay tuned," tweeted Birdman on February 8 on his @BIRDMAN5STAR Twitter page. The tweet is thought to be in direct response to Jay-Z’s line from him and collaborator Kanye West’s newest single “H.A.M.” where the Brooklyn rapper spits the line, “Really, you got baby money.” Jay-Z never confirmed nor denied that the line was intended to be a barb towards Lil Wayne and his compatriots.

Given the past history of Jay-Z and Lil Wayne and their past music collaborations, the allegations that a war between Roc Nation and the Young Money/Cash Money stable don’t immediately add up. Jay actually attempted to sign Weezy in the past and the pair has worked on a few notable tracks over the years.

If which of the artists made the most money is the true center of the discussion, Jay-Z clearly earned more than Birdman and Wayne in 2010 while making the Forbes list and earning $63 million while his semi-retired superstar wife Beyonce raked in a whopping $87 million. Lil Wayne made the list as well with reported earnings of $20 million – no small potatoes but not nearly enough to back up Birdman’s former claim that his protégé has more cash than Jigga.

Ya Boy Featuring Wiz Khalifa - Get Her High

Money Making Jam Boys Mixtape

The [group formed] right around the time we were making [2008's] The Antidote," began Truck North, who founded the album with Dice Raw in 2007 before their first free project. "We all wrote together anyway, on Roots albums. We came up with this concept to do some first thing that pops into your head-type of Rap. That's not really too hard with us, but it was the flip-coin of the cognitive, emotionally-heavy Roots projects."

From those early MMJB sessions, fans can get an audio glimpse of the group's earliest days in "Money Makes The World Go Round," which is included in The Prestige. "That's one of the oldest Jam Boys' joints," said Truck North, who said there are an entire album's worth of songs recorded over the last three-plus years that have never been heard.

In early 2011, respected clothing line 10.Deep stepped forward after some initial conversations with Truck North. "The stars kind of aligned on this one. It started with a chance meeting - me wanting some free gear," he said with a laugh. "Me wanting to rock some 10.Deep clothes turned into, 'Damn, we should do this mixtape.'"

10.Deep is respected for their history in artist mixtapes, including championed works like Kid Cudi's A Kid Named Cudi and Wale's A Mixtape About Nothing . "At this point in time, everybody has a clothing line, and everybody does something musical," pointed out Truck, when asked if he sees a growing trend in fashion and downloadable music collaborations. "Oversaturating that type of shit would be wack, 'cause there'd be no quality control. At that point, anybody with a t-shirt press and a rapper-friend [can do it]. With 10.Deep, it is quality controlled. The track record they have [is so respected]."

Within the tape are some highlighted moments, including "Coming Out Hard." Dice Raw explained that the particular drew inspiration from an unusual source. "Comin' Out Hard is my favorite album from 8Ball & MJG. It was [made in] the early part of the southern [Hip Hop dominance]. I feel like right now, east coast Hip Hop is in that same place, tryin' to make a resurgence. What's been goin' on in the Hip Hop world and in black music is soft, dumbed-down, dancy, jiggy mirror-image of the Pop market." Dice continued, "'Coming Out Hard' for me was about [being on] that 'Ball & MJG shit, just a Philly version. I was really feelin' like takin' mothafuckas out, all these soft rappers. Their voices is weak, and their beats is bubble-gum. That's what it's all about from me."

Like his battle rap-birthed partner, Truck North continued, "That's what we do: an all-out assault on rappers who can't maintain this level of lyricism."

With lyrical references and homages to the likes of Ol' Dirty Bastard, Schoolly D and Eric B. & Rakim on the project, Dice Raw was asked about the role in golden-era Hip Hop in influencing The Prestige. "The day and a half, all I've been listening to on repeat, is Kool G Rap [& DJ Polo's] Wanted: Dead Or Alive's 'Bad To The Bone', back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. It still has me captivated as when I first heard it, if not more." Truck added, "It's funny that he mentions that, 'cause I cannot stop listening to [The Beastie Boys'] Paul's Boutique and [Three Times Dope's] Original Styling."
Exclusive: The super-group that includes Dice Raw, Black Thought, P.O.R.N., S.T.S. and Truck North claims they are "an all-out assault on rappers who can't maintain this level of lyricism."

Last Thursday, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania emcee collective the Money Making Jam Boys released their first project, The Prestige mixed by Mick Boogie & Terry Urban. The veteran outfit of The Roots' Black Thought, Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N. and S.T.S. (a/k/a Sugar Tongue Slim) is making a splash with their 10.Deep-sponsored free project, the first after years of existing in the periphery of the extended Roots Crew family. Yesterday (February 7) Dice Raw and Truck North spoke about Prestige, the group's history, and future plans.

Both residents of Philadelphia - as Black Thought spends a bulk of his time in New York, and S.T.S. in Atlanta, the pair were asked how much The Prestige mirrors the trends in the various Philly neighborhoods, found in bars, parties and clubs. Dice explained that while the music's connection to the city is apparent to a listener, it was never a direct agenda of its makers. "It's like being aware of [something] all the time, like watchin' your back and shit. Then, smokin' a blunt, havin' a drink, and forgettin' all of that shit. Still, it's in you innately." Truck adds, "It's 'now' in the sense of forward-thinking. If we were just in the [present], we'd be Philly battle-rappers, that just seems like the shit to do from this city. But we try not to be where the ball is, but where the ball's gonna be."

As far as the MMJB's upcoming plans, the group is back focused on the powers that brought them together, The Roots. Both Dice Raw and Truck North are active in the ongoing sessions, which obviously also include Black Thought, the Roots' lead vocalist. "We're almost done right now," said Dice. Truck has a solo mixtape planned for spring called I Told You So, as well as a collaborative EP with Columbus, Ohio's. He said, "We're just keepin' our names goin' individually, but wavin' the Jam Boys flag the whole time."
